Can’t tell if it’s CRA Calling? Tips for you to avoid scammers

With the holidays right around the corner, being scammed is one of the last things on individuals’ minds, especially by someone claiming to be the CRA. Here are a few tips to help distinguish between an actual CRA agent vs. a scammer if you are ever unsure.

  1. Request the caller to provide their full name and agent ID and call back phone number.

  2. Confirm which office/tax center the agent is calling you from.

  3. End the call and call the CRA back directly at one of the following numbers:

    • Individual tax services: 1-800-959-8281

    • Business tax services: 1-800-959-5525

The CRA should never use threatening language or ask for personal information such as your Social Insurance Number or Credit Card Information. These would be red flags that the caller is not with the CRA, and following the above steps will help mitigate any risk of falling victim.
